Coffee and Condoms

There are many that believe in the concept of harm reduction when it comes to prostitution. I think it is nonsense, and highly dangerous nonsense.

Harm reduction is an ideal way for the profiteers to keep their money rolling in, for it gives the veneer they give a damn about the safety of the prostituted, whilst continuing to allow the violence to go on as normal, when the do-gooders have gone.

But then harm reduction is very little about the safety and dignity of the prostituted – much more about outward show, making it clean and safe for punters – and always keeping an endless flow of sexual goods on tap.

Look how few of the prostituted are included in most harm reduction schemes.

It is usually aimed at street-based prostituted women and girls, often only if they fit in with drug addiction projects.

So will miss out on the vast majority of prostituted women and girls.

In many western cities, there are half-assed ways of helping the prostituted – for there is little or no encouragement to build intensive ways to help the prostituted to exit, no offers of long-term specialise counselling, no real hope – just coffee and condoms and sent them back into danger.

It not good enough to give out “bad punters” lists, without fighting to change attitudes and laws that men have the entitlement to buy and sell the prostituted class.

It not good enough to have van going to street-based prostituted women and girls – if you don’t fight the status quo of sexual violence, poverty, racism, child abuse and all the other push factors that have created the prostituted class.

If all you do is hand out coffee and condoms, you part of the problem, not the solution.

But what makes me furious is that the majority of prostituted women and girls are abandoned by harm reduction projects.

This is mainly those who are in indoors prostitution – whether on the net, in brothels, in saunas, in lap-dancing and other sex entertainment clubs, escorts and on and on.

These women and girls are abandoned – it left to the profiteers to do their own version of harm reduction. The profiteers who view the prostituted as nothing but cash-cows, are meant to out the kindness of their hearts to care about the prostituted’s physical and mental welfare.

If you believe that, then you really are more than naive, you are stupid – or maybe you don’t give a damn, for the prostituted aren’t fully human, so why care about their safety.

Most of the so-called harm reduction in indoors prostitution is just for show – it can be cameras which may or not have film in them, “bodyguards” who more often than not ignore noises of violence or may wank over it without helping, alarms that are hard to reach when all that matters is remembering to stay alive.

Harm reduction is a sick joke to most prostituted women and girls.

The worst thing about harm reduction in indoors prostitution is usually when outsider inspect, they often negotiate with the managers, brothel-owners, pimps etc when they will come in.

This means everything is cleaned up – cameras have film put in them, bodyguards claim they would never let violence go by, there is chat about taking many and various precautions about what “clients” come in, alarms have batteries put in, all under-aged and externally trafficked prostitutes are not working that night, all prostitutes with outward bruises or signs of drug habit are not there, in sex entertainment clubs there is no touching, and on and on and on.

It is left with smiling happy robots adult prostituted women who speak the propaganda of empowerment and how safe it is to be indoors.

No-one is encouraged to look into their eyes for too long, just in case they see the deadness, or even catch a plea to end their hell.

Harm reduction ignore the reality of indoors prostitution, or if it can pretend it is safe enough – that means prostitution can continued as normal.

I don’t need or want harm reduction for the prostituted.

I need and want all men to stop buying and selling the prostituted class.

That would real harm reduction.

  1. I agree, Ms. Mott–I especially appreciate your analysis of harm reduction in regards to indoor prostitution–which reveals the true aim of harm reduction– to just get the visual evidence of women’s suffering out of view. And, of course, contain the women so the fellas can have easier access to them.

this: “This means everything is cleaned up – cameras have film put in them, bodyguards claim they would never let violence go by, there is chat about taking many and various precautions about what “clients” come in, alarms have batteries put in, all under-aged and externally trafficked prostitutes are not working that night, all prostitutes with outward bruises or signs of drug habit are not there, in sex entertainment clubs there is no touching, and on and on and on.”

    is chilling.

    Thank you for this.
